The Chain Bridge had fallen into disrepair and was closed to the public in the 1980’s.  Council  were determined that the bridge, a key part of history in the area, should be restored and reopened to pedestrians; once more re-establishing the strong link between the Railway and the Canal, all part of the Pontcysyllte World Heritage Site, as well as helping to preserve one of the oldest chain link bridges in the Western World.
